Baker's Fire Prevention Month Resolution
Adopted
HARRISBURG – The State Senate unanimously approved a resolution
introduced by Senator Lisa Baker (R-Luzerne) proclaiming October 2007 as "Fire
Prevention Month" in Pennsylvania.
October is generally recognized as Fire Prevention Month with
education and outreach events set forth by the National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) and annual recognition offered via Presidential proclamation.
Fire safety is a serious public safety concern locally and on a
national basis, with our homes being the location of greatest fire risk.
According to the NFPA, home fires killed 3,030 people in the United States in
2005 – roughly eight people every day.
Pennsylvania's first responders are dedicated to reducing the
occurrence of home fires and the resultant injuries through a variety of fire
education and prevention efforts. And research shows these prevention efforts
to be promising. Individuals who plan and practice home escape plans are more
likely to survive a home fire than are those who do not.
As Chair of the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency
Preparedness Committee, Senator Baker encourages all Pennsylvanians to support
the fire safety activities of the NFPA and Pennsylvania's fire and emergency
service providers. She also encourages Pennsylvanians to plan and practice home
escape plans.
Baker's district includes all of Pike, Wayne, and Wyoming
counties and parts of Luzerne, Monroe, and Susquehanna counties.
