In this Update:
Honoring the Elders of Our CommunitiesNational Senior Citizens’ Day – Wednesday, Aug. 21 – is the perfect opportunity to spend time with older men and women. Whether you take time to help them with chores or listen to their stories, they will certainly appreciate the extra attention. Seniors made incredible contributions to our society and continue to be valued members of our communities. To support them, Senate Republicans passed bills that are now law to prevent the exploitation of older Pennsylvanians, ensure Pennsylvanians receive access to health care services at nursing homes, preserve prescription drug benefits for seniors and assure nursing homes continue to serve Medical Assistance (MA) recipients by requiring timely MA payments. 162nd Annual Wayne County Fair Kicks Off Season in the 20th DistrictThe 20th District fair season kicked off last week with the 162nd Annual Wayne County Fair! Peifer Named to 2024 NCAA Gold Glove TeamWyatt Peifer was named to the 2024 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Gold Glove team, earning a spot as third baseman. A rising junior at James Madison University, he is the first Dukes player to win a Gold Glove award. He helped the team to advance to the NCAA Division I regionals, ending the season second in assists and ranking as the top infielder. I recently joined Rep. Jeff Olsommer to congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition. A standout at Wallenpaupack Area, Wyatt is the son of proud parents Jen and Mike Peifer of Greentown. I am sure we will continue to see great things from this talented young athlete. Camp Oneka for Girls Offers Lifelong Friendships and MemoriesLocated on the shores of Fairview Lake in the Pocono Mountains, Camp Oneka is one of the oldest residential summer camps for girls in the nation. For the last five years, Rachel and Johnny Waszczak have continued providing the exciting and fun-filled experience the camp has been known for since 1908. Their family-style environment has helped girls grow in confidence and self-reliance, while making lifelong friendships and memories. Protect Against Mosquito-Borne VirusesPennsylvania boasts so many opportunities for outdoor recreation, especially in the summer. To safely enjoy all nature has to offer, it’s important to know about potential risks and how to minimize them. The leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental United States is West Nile Virus (WNV), which can cause inflammation of the brain. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection tracks cases of WNV and Jamestown Canyon Virus by county. Since 2000, Pennsylvania’s state budget has included funding to monitor and control WNV. There is no treatment or vaccine for WNV, but people can protect themselves by wearing shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods of time or when mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk. Consider the use of mosquito repellent and wash all treated skin and clothing when returning indoors.
